Florindo Sassone

Florindo Sassone (1912–1982) was a violinist and orchestra leader born Pedro Florindo Sassone in the Liniers neighborhood of Buenos Aires. After graduating as a violin teacher, he played in the orchestras of Antonio Polito and Roberto Firpo before forming his own group in 1935. He took a break from music in the early 1940s but re-emerged in 1946, beginning the most successful phase of his career. His first recordings for the RCA Victor label began in 1947, and he would later record for Odeon and other labels, continuing to lead his orchestra into the 1970s.

The Sassone sound is often described as a blend of influences, recalling the elegance of Osvaldo Fresedo and the melodic clarity of Carlos Di Sarli, yet achieving its own distinct personality. The orchestra is known for its lush, grand, and sweeping string arrangements, creating a rich texture that is immediately recognizable to dancers. Sassone prioritized a clean melodic line over showcasing individual soloists, using polished and pleasant arrangements that created a powerful, unified sound. This focus on the full orchestra and its rich string section gives the music a romantic and often dramatic quality, with a strong, danceable rhythm that avoids the hard drive of D'Arienzo.

While this library focuses on his instrumental work, Sassone's initial rise to fame was closely tied to his vocalists, particularly Jorge Casal, who joined in 1947. Over his career, he worked with a series of notable singers, including Roberto Chanel, Mario Bustos, Rodolfo Galé, and others. However, Sassone always maintained a strong focus on instrumental pieces, and by the late 1950s, his recordings for the Odeon label placed an even greater emphasis on them. The instrumental recordings in this collection, like "Bahía Blanca," "A la Gran Muñeca," and "El Amanecer," showcase the orchestra's power and refined melodic sensibility without a vocalist at the forefront.

At milongas today, a tanda of Florindo Sassone is a perfect choice for bringing a wave of elegant, romantic energy to the dance floor. His music has a grandeur that can fill the room, often played during the heart of the evening to inspire big, sweeping steps. DJs frequently turn to his powerful instrumentals for their drive and emotional weight. Well-loved choices like the dramatic "Derecho Viejo" or the classic "La Cumparsita" are guaranteed to see dancers heading to the floor for a rich and satisfying tanda.
