Francini-Pontier
Francini-Pontier (founded 1945) was the brilliant, decade-long partnership of violinist Enrique Mario Francini (1916–1978) and bandoneonist Armando Pontier (1917–1983). The two friends had already played together in the orchestras of Juan Ehlert and the great Miguel Caló before stepping out to form their own group. They debuted on September 1, 1945, at the Tango Bar in Buenos Aires, launching what would become one of the most popular and musically sophisticated orchestras of the era. The collaboration was a true union of two distinct musical personalities, creating a sound that was both innovative and deeply danceable.
The orchestra's sound is defined by the elegant dialogue between Francini's virtuosic violin and Pontier's expressive bandoneon. Their music has a rich, melodic quality and a powerful rhythmic drive, often with a complex and polished sound that appealed to discerning dancers. While inspired by the lyricism of Aníbal Troilo, Francini-Pontier forged their own path, marked by sophisticated arrangements, often contributed by the great Argentino Galván, and a clean, powerful execution. The result is a sound that is both romantic and energetic, perfect for dancers who appreciate intricate musicality without sacrificing the clear marcato beat that grounds the dance.
The orchestra's debut featured the voices of both Alberto Podestá and Raúl Berón, establishing a high standard for vocalists from the very beginning. Podestá's smooth, emotive style can be heard on their very first recording, the classic "Margo" from 1946. Berón, with his nuanced and delicate phrasing, brought a different color to the orchestra on tracks like "Uno." Over their ten years together, the orchestra would also feature other major singers, including Roberto Rufino and a young Julio Sosa, always integrating the vocals as a key part of the musical texture.
At milongas today, a Francini-Pontier tanda is a sign of a musically ambitious moment in the evening. It’s for a floor full of dancers who are ready to listen and interpret, offering a rich, satisfying experience that is both powerful and elegant. DJs often turn to their instrumentals to raise the energy and sophistication, with powerful tracks like the driving "A los Amigos" or the dramatic, sweeping "Delirio" guaranteed to inspire expressive, musical dancing.
